The Andaz Abu Dhabi is the best secret and best hotel bargain in the world – at least at certain times of the year. As a member of the Hyatt Hotels and Resort Group, this luxury convention hotel in Abu Dhabi is different and has it all. The 189-room hotel occupies floors 18 to 33 of the Capital Gate skyscraper, which holds the Guinness World Record for the “World’s furthest leaning man-made tower.”
The tower was constructed with an 18-degree westward lean. The floor plates change shape and orientation to create the distinctive overhang moving from “curved triangular” to “curved rectangular,” while increasing in overall size and migrating from east to west as they progress up the tower.
The Tower’s curvaceous shape draws strongly on the sea and desert – 2 elements that have great resonance in Abu Dhabi. The building’s form represents a swirling spiral of sand. The curved canopy, known as the “Splash,” which runs over the adjoining grandstand and rises up on one side of the building, creates a wave-like effect while shading the façade.
The building has a completely asymmetric shape – no two rooms are the same, and all 12,500 panes of glass on the façade are a different size. A diagrid structural system was utilized in which all 8,250 steel diagrid members are of different thicknesses, length, and orientation and each of the 822 diagrid nodes is of different size and angular configuration.
“Where can you stay in a suite in an ultra-modern super luxury 5-star hotel that is also featured in the Guinness book of records for under $100 a night including breakfast and suite upgrade?” asked Juergen Steinmetz, publisher of eTurboNews.
I stayed at the hotel when it was the Hyatt Capital Gate. One time I had a suite able to entertain 200 guests. Now Hyatt Capital Gate is an Andaz Hotel, which is still part of the Hyatt Group. The hotel is ideally located adjacent to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center.
During exhibitions, this hotel is under high demand and rates may easily go over $1,000 a night, but when there isn’t any trade show, this hotel becomes one of the best hotel bargains on the globe.
True, the hotel is a 20-minute taxi ride to the city, the Louvre museum, or the airport, but taxis are readily available and the cost is only around $10.
I stayed at the Andaz Hotel Abu Dhabi on September 26, and it was one of those hotels you really don’t want to check out from.
From the international breakfast buffet to the pool, this hotel was perfect. My suite on the 32nd floor made me feel like I owned the city of Abu Dhabi.
Fruits and sweets were ready when I checked in, and color-coded soap, shampoo, and conditioner made it a lot easier to identify what is what when using my raindrop shower or private jacuzzi.
I always look for some critical items, but there weren’t any – at least once you figure what button to push to open the curtains in the morning and say, “Good morning, Abu Dhabi.”
Steinmetz said: “I booked my stay at hyatt.com for a regular rate. I am a “Globalist member” of World of Hyatt, the Hyatt points program. Globalist is the highest tier. Globalist travelers routinely receive suite upgrades for no additional rate, and breakfast is always included. This is not a sponsored article. Andaz did not seek out my affiliation with this publication. Andaz sometimes did inspire me, including the non-waste drinks in Amsterdam.
“Returning back to the United States and staying at another Hyatt, I asked myself, “Why do hotels in the U.S. have so much less to offer compared to what one can find overseas?”
The photos were taken at the Andaz Hotel Abu Dhabi and speak for themselves.
