Routes Asia is an annual event held in various locations, aiming to facilitate the growth of air services in the Asia Pacific region by fostering collaboration among airlines, airports, and tourism authorities. Tourism plays a crucial role in the economy of Western Australia. During the 2021-22 period, the sector provided support to almost 30,000 tourism enterprises and created over 89,000 jobs in tourism. The state also benefited from a significant infusion of $16.8 billion through visitor expenditure. To sustain this ongoing economic growth, improved air connectivity is imperative to the region’s strategic plans.
Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, is dedicated to establishing direct flight connections from important markets such as China, India, South Korea, and other untapped regions. By hosting Routes Asia 2025, Perth will prove to major airlines in the area that these routes are both feasible and profitable, while also highlighting Western Australia as an attractive tourism spot.
Qantas’ plans to launch a direct flight between Perth and Paris in July 2024 were met with enthusiasm by the airport last year. This was accompanied by notable route developments in Perth, such as increased services from Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, and Jetstar. Additionally, there was a seasonal service to Shanghai by China Eastern, the return of Thai Airways and South African Airways, and the exciting introduction of AirAsia Berhad to the market.
